Essentials for every trip

  • Passport, printed e-visa, insurance details and copies of each
  • US dollars in clean, newer bills
  • Phone, charger, power bank and a universal plug adapter
  • Prescription medicines in their original packaging, plus basic first-aid items
  • Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes and easy slip-on sandals for shrine visits
  • A small cloth bag to carry your shoes inside the Harams
  • Turbah, tasbeeh and a pocket dua and Ziyarat book
  • Reusable water bottle

Clothing for the shrines

  • Women: loose, modest clothing and an abaya or chador; a black chador is commonly worn and may be required at some gates.
  • Men: long trousers and modest shirts; avoid shorts.
  • Many pilgrims wear black during Muharram and Safar.

Winter (November to February)

Days are mild but nights can be cold, especially in Najaf and Karbala. Pack a warm jacket, layers and socks for the cold marble floors of the Harams. Our Thanksgiving and Shaban trips fall in this season.

Summer (June to September)

Temperatures are very high. Pack light cotton clothing, a hat or umbrella for shade, sunscreen, electrolyte sachets and a cooling towel. This is the season for Arbaeen and, in 2027, Muharram.

Pack light. You will move between three cities, and a single carry-on plus one checked bag per person keeps transfers easy.
