Kazmain and Samarra Ziyarat guide

North of Karbala and Najaf lie the shrines of four more Imams (as): Kazmain in Baghdad and Samarra on the Tigris. Here is what to know before you visit.

Guide · Updated 27 October 2026

Kazmain (Kadhimiya), Baghdad

The twin golden domes of Kazmain cover the graves of Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as), the seventh Imam, and his grandson Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (as), the ninth Imam. The great scholars Shaykh al-Mufid and Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi are buried within the complex.

Because groups fly into Baghdad, Kazmain is usually the first or last Ziyarat of a KBM Tours trip. Our Shaban groups spend a night at Balad Al Amin hotel in Kazmain.

Samarra

About two hours north of Baghdad, the Askariyain shrine holds Imam Ali al-Hadi (as) and Imam Hassan al-Askari (as), the tenth and eleventh Imams, together with Sayyida Narjis (sa), mother of Imam-e-Zamana (atfs). Beside it is the Sardab, associated with the occultation of Imam Mahdi (atfs).

The golden dome was destroyed in 2006 and has since been rebuilt. Samarra is usually visited as a day trip from Baghdad, and is included on selected KBM Tours groups.

Tips for your visit

  • Recite Ziyarat Jami’a Kabira, which was taught by Imam Ali al-Hadi (as), at Samarra.
  • Kazmain is busy on Thursday nights and on the anniversaries of the Imams.
  • Expect security checks on the road to Samarra and at the shrine gates.
